What is Open Source Softwere ?

Most software that you buy or download only comes in the compiled ready-to-run version. It is extremely difficult to modify the compiled version of most applications and nearly impossible to see exactly how the developer created different parts of the program. The software developers who support the open source concept believe that by allowing anyone who's interested to modify the source code.

What is open source?

The term "open source" refers to something people can modify and share because its design is publicly accessible. Open source software(OSS) is software with source code that anyone can inspect, modify, and enhance. It is computer software with its source code made available with a license in which the copyright holder provides the rights to study, change, and distribute the software to anyone and for any purpose.

Criteria to be an open source?

An open-source license is a type of license for computer software and other products that allows the source code, blueprint or design to be used, modified and/or shared under defined terms and conditions Open-source licensed software is mostly available free of charge, though this does not necessarily have to be the case. Anyone must be allowed to modify the source code. Modified versions can be redistributed. The license must not require the exclusion of other software or interfere with the operation of other software.

Why do people use open source softwere?

If scientist kept their methods secret science would develop a lot slower. We would see the results but we wouldn't be able to build on the research or verify the results because the research is closed. The principle is the same as with Open Source Projects.

  • Many users prefer open source software to proprietary software for important, long-term projects. Because programmers publicly distribute the source code for open source software, users relying on that software for critical tasks can be sure their tools won't disappear or fall into disrepair if their original creators stop working on them

  • Some programmer like to use open source project for training purpose. Because open source code is publicly accessible, students can easily study it as they learn to make better software.

  • Some people prefer Open Source Softwere consider it more secure and stable than proprietary software. Because anyone can view and modify open source software, someone might spot and correct errors or omissions that a program's original authors might have missed.

  • Many people prefer open source software because they have more control over that kind of software. They can examine the code to make sure it's not doing anything they don't want it to do, and they can change parts of it they don't like.
